When it
comes to discussing dental procedures, one specific procedure often
comes immediately to mind: tooth extractions. While dentists from all
over the world have advised that basic everyday caring for the teeth
is important, it is inevitable that some teeth have to come out at
some point.
An
impacted wisdom tooth may need to be removed if it causes pain or
crowding in the teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth are those that don’t
completely break out of the gum, or are only partially able to break
through. Impacted wisdom teeth are fairly common among people; some
have no problems with them at all, while others encounter pain enough
to have to go to the dentist.
Trauma or
a sharp blow to the mouth may also mandate a tooth extraction. This
is because a strong force can chip or crack a tooth; and if the
damage is much worse than expected, saving the tooth isn’t
possible. Broken teeth are more prone to disease or decay; and if
saving them is impossible, they’ll have to be taken out and
replaced by a dental implant.
Gum
disease is also a prevalent cause for tooth extraction. It is
considered a leading cause of tooth loss, and is brought about by
ineffective dental hygiene, poor overall health, certain medications,
and more prominently, tobacco use. Tooth extractions are also common
in cases where overcrowding and misaligned teeth are affecting a
person’s appearance that a few extra teeth taken out can make a
difference.
